Special Assistance Accommodation
Many hotels, motels or resorts have rooms set up for guests with special needs. These rooms may be known as Special Assistance or Handicap Rooms or by some other name but typically are designed for guests using wheelchairs, walkers, canes, or crutches or who are visually impaired guests or have hearing difficulties. These special rooms also will be available for little people who find difficulty with furniture and fittings made for larger and taller persons.
Travelers who need these special accommodations should seek out hotels, motels or resorts that have features to suit, such as:
- larger rooms with wide doors and more space between beds and furniture
- lower light switches, heat and air conditioning controls, shower heads, closet rods, door peepholes, towelbars, sinks, toilets, and easy access to in-room amenities such as shampoos, shower caps and so on
- grab bars in the bathroom
- electronic drapes
- telephones in the bathroom
- easy off/on lights, including bedside access to lights near the door.
- emergency alarm systems with sound for visually impaired or lights for hard of hearing guests
- vibrating alarm clocks may be available for hearing impaired guests
- amplified telephone headsets and other devices to ease the making and receiving of calls
- televisions with special controllers for visually impaired
- televisions with subtitle programming for guests with hearing difficulties
- in-room refrigerators and microwaves
- manual or electronic lifting devices for beds and bathroom
- roll-in shower
- special bed pads
- special stools for little people to reach high shelves, counters and other areas
Ask if other areas of the property are handicapped accessible, including swimming pools, dining rooms, lounges, front desk and exterior areas such as patios, courtyards and parking areas.
